Overview

The Smart Array 532 Controller is a 64-bit, 66 MHz dual SCSI channel PCI array controller for entry-level hardware-based fault tolerance. Utilizing both SCSI channels (1 internal and 1 external) of the SA-532 allows you to configure up to 28 hard drives to store up to 1TB of storage per PCI slot.

Key benefits

  • Dual Ultra3 SCSI channels allow for higher data performance (160 MB/s per channel; up to 320 MB/s total) and allows for up to 1TB of storage per PCI slot.
  • 32 MB cache memory optimizes data throughput and performance.
  • Software consistency and data compatibility across the Smart Array family line simplifies deployment.
  • Mix and match LVD SCSI compatibility offers investment protection by mixing Ultra2 and Ultra3 on the same SCSI bus (Ultra2 devices will transfer data at 80 MB/s and Ultra3 devices at 160 MB/s).
The SA-532 provides high reliability and increased performance over the Smart Array 431, thus providing excellent value and lowering the total server ownership cost. In addition, the SA-532 is data compatible with all Wide Ultra3 and Wide Ultra2 drives and servers, offering an unparalleled degree of investment protection. Designed and integrated with Compaq entry-level and workgroup ProLiant servers, this product provides worry-free data protection.

Ideal environment

The Smart Array 532 provides the best performance and capacity for entry-level and workgroup Compaq ProLiant Server, or any ProLiant Servers, where hardware RAID is needed at an entry level price.

Problems & Requirements
  • Hardware-based RAID fault tolerance
  • Need for increased performance and data bandwidth
  • Investment protection in legacy Ultra2 servers, hard disk drives and storage
Typical Use
  • Dual Ultra3 SCSI channels allow for the user to use the one internal SCSI channel for the OS and data storage on the internal hard disk drives and the one external SCSI channel for additional data storage using the StorageWorks Enclosure 4300.
  • Consistent with Compaq's LVD strategy, the Smart Array 532 Controller can be used to mix and match Ultra2 and Ultra3 devices on the same Ultra3 SCSI bus. When Ultra2 devices and Ultra3 devices are found on the same Ultra3 SCSI bus, each Ultra2 device will transfer data up to 80 MB/s, while each Ultra3 device will transfer data up to 160 MB/s.

The Smart Array advantage

The innovative design and integration work of the Compaq Smart Array family of products creates customer value unmatched in the industry. Use of Smart Array products in the enterprise results in a much lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) than any other server storage RAID products. The Compaq Smart Array family brings an unparalleled return on investment through:

  • Data Compatibility - Smart Array controllers allow for simple and easy upgrades any time customers require higher performance, greater capacity, and/or increased availability. Every successive generation of Smart Array controllers understands the data format of other Smart Array controllers making upgrading quick and easy.
  • Consistent Configuration and Management Tools - All Smart Array products utilize a standard set of management and utility software that minimize Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by reducing training requirements and technical expertise.
  • Universal Hard Drive - With form factor compatibility across many enterprise platforms, you can deploy and re-deploy these drives to quickly deliver increased storage capacity, migrate data between systems, and attain easier to manage spare drives.
  • Pre-Failure Warranty - Compaq Insight Manager not only reports when a drive is going to fail, but also allows replacement of failing drives prior to actual failure. For complete details, consult the Compaq Support Center or refer to your Compaq Server documentation.
