Answers

Q1. Why would I purchase HP Command View EVA Software for HP Enterprise Virtual Arrays?
A1. The HP Command View EVA Software suite is required to manage at least one EVA. It provides centralized management, provisioning, health monitoring and control of EVA in a SAN.
Q2. What is Command View Array-Based Management?
A2. Command View software now operates on the embedded management module that ships with every HP 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array.
Q3. What advantages does array-based management provide?
A3.

Because Command View now runs on the management module embedded in the EVA4400, it reduces the need for a separate management server. The EVA6100 and EVA8100 models of the EVA family still need a management server for Command View.

Array-based management reduces the cost of deploying an EVA 4400 since a management server is now optional in most configurations. In addition, it makes available the Fibre Channel and Ethernet switch ports previously used by the management server.

Q4. What EVA models are supported with array-based Command View?
A4. The management module is only available on the HP 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array.
Q5. Can an HP 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array be managed by both array-based and server based versions of Command View?
A5. Only one instance of Command View can manage an array at any given time. All other Command View instances are in passive mode. Users can browse to a passive instance of Command View and designate it as the active manager for an HP 4400 Enterprise Virtual Array.
Q6. What is the policy and use of upgrade licenses?
A6.
  1. Only HP Command View Unlimited LTUs can be upgraded between HP EVA models.
  2. For HP EVA's with HP Command View 1TB LTU's, they must first be upgrade to an Unlimited LTU prior to upgrading between EVA models.
  3. HP Command View LTUs are non-transferable between EVA models as they are model specific. All HP EVA model upgrades require a new HP Command View LTU.
  4. Upgrades are considered when the current EVA system is either 1) being decommissioned or 2) data in place upgrade.
Q7. Does the HP 6400/8400 Enterprise Virtual Array support the EVA software products?
A7. Yes, the EVA6400 and EVA8400 are a dual-controller product. The controllers are housed in 2 2U enclosures and require a total of 4U of rack space. This design allows them to be non-disruptively replaced if required.
Q8. Do the HP 6400/8400 Enterprise Virtual Array allow data in place upgrade from the EVA4400?
A8. The EVA4400, EVA6400 and EVA8400 support data in place upgrades within the array family. Discounted Command View licenses are available for cost effective upgrades. The controllers need to be on the same firmware version prior to the upgrade and an HP Service representative support is recommended.
Q9. Can the same instance of Command View EVA be used to support all the EVAs in my SAN?
A9. Yes. Command View EVA 9.1 which supports the new EVA6400 and EVA8400 can also be used to manage all the other EVAs in your SAN.
