Answers

Q1. How do I get HP Data Protector Express Basic Software?
A1. HP Data Protector Express Basic Software is delivered as part of the HP tape products solutions. It is included with all HP tape drives, all HP tape autoloaders, HP MSL2024 tape libraries and HP MSL4048 tape libraries. Data Protector Express Basic Software is not a saleable product and is not available any other way than as part of the purchase of these HP tape products.
Q2. Why do I need to register HP Data Protector Express Basic Software?
A2. You need to register the software to get a free permanent license key. Data Protector Express Basic Software is delivered with an electronic Entitlement Certificate. This Entitlement Certificate has an Order Number that is exchanged, using a simple registration process, for the free permanent license key. There is also the 'Register' button in the user interface that provides a short cut to the license key delivery site at https://webware.hp.com

The license key for HP Data Protector Express Basic Software can be acquired before the software is installed, using the Entitlement Certificate in the doc directory on the CD so that the license key can be entered during the installation process. It is possible to install Data Protector Express Basic Software in 'instant-on' mode using the embedded 60 day evaluation License Key. The permanent License Key can be acquired and added at any time during the 60 days after installation. If no permanent License Key is entered the software will stop working after 60 days. For information about registering Data Protector Express Basic Software to get the License Key go to: http://www.hp.com/go/dataprotectorexpress/basic/register

Q3. What are the differences between HP Data Protector Express and HP Data Protector Express Basic?
A3. HP Data Protector Express Basic Software has a subset of the features of HP Data Protector Express Software. The features of Data Protector Express Basic Software are designed to robustly protect a single machine by backup to a HP tape device. Data Protector Express has a fuller feature set that is unlocked by upgrading. The upgrade path is from Data Protector Express Basic Software to Data Protector Express for one Server. Each server license for Data Protector Express includes all the product functionality because of the new all-inclusive licensing scheme.
Q4. Why should I upgrade from HP Data Protector Express Basic Software to HP Data Protector Express Software?
A4. Reasons to upgrade HP Data Protector Express Basic Software to HP Data Protector Express Software include:
  1. Network backup: Add additional server licenses to consolidate the backup of all machines on your network. Share backup devices and manage your data protection centrally. Data Protector Express also enables an unlimited number of Windows (XP, Vista, 7) clients to be backed up.

With Data Protector Express you can encrypt backups before they are written to the backup device expanding your choice of backup targets.
  6. Multi-tier backup and recovery: The Data Protector Express D2Any2Any feature enables backups to disk (or other supported media) to be automatically copied to tape (or other supported media). This enables backups to be held on disk for the short term and tape for longer term retention.
  7. Support for multi-drive devices: Data Protector Express Basic Software enables backup to a single drive device. Data Protector Express enables devices with multiple drives to be used. This enables multi-drive tape libraries to be used as well as multiple drives configured in Virtual Tape Libraries (VTLs) or Data Protector Express Virtual Libraries without any additional licenses needed.
