Answers

Q1. Who is HP Data Protector Express software designed for?
A1. HP Data Protector Express Software is designed for organizations that require robust, reliable and affordable data protection but do not have specialist IT storage or disaster recovery staff. These organizations will often have a small number of networked file, email or database servers and Windows clients. Data Protector Express enables a robust process for data protection without requiring a big investment in training or additional resources.
Q2. What is so special about the new licensing scheme?
A2. Traditionally backup and recovery software uses a licensing model that starts with a base product (Backup Server, Master Server, Cell Manager, etc) which provided limited functionality. For additional functionality, such as application integration, D2D backup capacity and backup to multi-drive libraries, it was necessary to purchase option licenses. Data Protector Express has a radically simplified, all inclusive, licensing scheme that is based simply on number of servers protected. Each server license includes all Data Protector Express functionality.
Q3. Why do I need to register Data Protector Express?
A3. HP Data Protector Express Software has an embedded instant-on license key. This enables 10 servers to be protected for up to 60 days until the permanent license keys are added. For each Data Protector Express purchase an Entitlement Certificate, that contains a unique Order Number, is received. This Order Number is exchanged during the web-based registration process for a permanent license key. This permanent license key is entered via the Data Protector Express GUI and enables the number of servers for which licenses were purchased. This may be more or less than the 10 servers enabled during the evaluation period.

For information about registering Data Protector Express to get the License Keys see here: http://www.hp.com/go/dataprotectorexpress/register

Q4. What is Data Protector Express Basic?
A4. HP Data Protector Express 6.0 Basic Software is a 'lite' version of HP Data Protector Express 6.0 Software that is included with all tape drives, tape autoloaders and MSL2024/4048 tape autoloader. It is not available any other way. The features of Data Protector Express Basic support all the tape drive features (encryption, WORM, OBDR) and enable robust protection of a single machine. Data Protector Express Basic was previously call Data Protector Express Single Server Edition. Both are easily and economically upgraded to Data Protector Express using pre-discounted part number TC333BAE.

Q5. What are the Data Protector Express Backup Domain and Data Protector Express Catalog?
A5. When Data Protector Express is installed the Data Protector Express Backup Domain is created. All machines protected are members of the Backup Domain. The Backup Domain is the view used for management. It includes the Data Protector Express catalog, a special purpose database, which stores all the settings and resource information for the Backup Domain. There is one Data Protector Express Backup Domain per Data Protector Express catalog and one Data Protector Express catalog per Backup Domain. By default the catalog is installed on first machine added to the Data Protector Express Backup Storage Domain but it can be installed on any machine on the network.
Q6. How does the Data Protector Express application integration work?
A6. The online application integration enables a Microsoft Exchange Server or SQL Server to be selected as a backup source. For Exchange, backup of individual storage groups is possible. For recovery, Mailbox level protection for Exchange 2010 can be used to enable the recovery of individual mailboxes without restoring the entire Exchange database. For SQL Server individual databases can be protected and restored. For both applications, automatic truncation of transaction logs follows backup.
Q7. What is the Data Protector Express D2Any2Any feature?
A7. This feature provides multi-tier backup and recovery to take advantage of the complementary benefits of disk and tape as backup targets. The D2Any2Any feature enables backup to disk with automated copy of the backup data to tape. Additionally a rotation scheme can be set up to retain backup data on disk for days or weeks and the copy on tape for months or years. Direct recovery is possible from tape if recovery of older data is required.

When used in conjunction with a Data Protector Express Virtual Library the D2Any2Any option moves/copies backup data in the Virtual Library to any supported media. When used in conjunction with supported backup devices the D2Any2Any option allows a copy job to be associated with a backup job so a copy executes automatically after the backup job has completed. When the backup job is controlled by a rotation schedule, it allows copy jobs to associated with some but not all instances of the backup job to control which backups, and how many, are copied to tertiary media.

Q8. How does data encryption work in Data Protector Express?
A8. HP Data Protector Express Software allows users to transport backup media offsite with the security of knowing that if the media is lost it will not be readable by any third party. The use of backup data encryption is made as simple and reliable with Data Protector Express. The user configures data encryption when the job is created. The data encryption simply requires the user to enter a passphrase. An optional hint can be associated with the passphrase. Then, transparently to the users, a secure encryption key is created based on the passphrase and other values. Data Protector Express manages the encryption keys. To recover data from an encrypted medium, the passphrase must be entered. If the passphrase cannot be remembered, the restore job will not run. A lost passphrase cannot be recovered. The same simple data encryption process is used for the software-based data encryption as well as when using hardware-based data encryption, such as the HP Ultrium LTO-4, Ultrium LT0-5 and DAT 320 tape drives. Where possible it is recommended to use hardware based encryption for best performance.
Q9. How do I upgrade Data Protector Express 3.x/4.0 or 5.0 to Data Protector Express 6.0?
A9. If you have Data Protector Express 5.0 with a valid support contract you are entitled to a free of charge upgrade to Data Protector Express 6.0. The Support Contract Administrator has tools to map your existing licenses to your new license entitlements. If you do not have a valid support contract you need to purchase a Return To Support (RTS) for each of your Data Protector Express licenses.

The steps are easy:

  1. Provide your local Contract Administrator with:
    1. Customer name
    2. Contract number, SAID, or LLFL of DPX contract
    3. Migration effective date
  2. The Contract Administrator terminates support on version 5.0 SKUs.
  3. The Contract Administrator adds version 6.0 SKUs based on number of servers customer had covered via version 5.0 SKUs.
  4. Contract Administrator orders version 6.0 media and keys be sent to the customer against their migrated support contract. On receipt of the media kits for Data Protector Express 6.0, registration to acquire the Data Protector Express 6.0 license keys is done using the web based license key delivery service. Instructions are included on the media kit.
  5. Customer receives version 6.0 media and keys in mail. This migration process, from the date that Contract Admin receives the request from the customer, to the date the customer receives their physical media shipment, can take up to 15 business days.

If you need to find your local Contract Administrator, please following the instructions on: http://esca3.europe.hp.com/

If you are a customer with an active support contract for Data Protector Express 3.x/4.x and did not upgrade to Data Protector Express 5.0 by September 26, 2011, then you will not be able to migrate to Data Protector Express 5.0 or 6.0 now. The only way to get the latest version in this case will be to buy the product (version 5.0 or 6.0) licenses.
