| Q4. |
What is the Data Protector Express software that is installed on the HP StorageWorks All-in-One Storage System? |
| A4. |
Every All-in-One Storage System has a Data Protector Express Backup Server factory installed and licensed. This provides the data protection component of the AiO which is easily managed using the AiO's management interface. This allows backup and recovery of the iSCSI LUNs and NAS file volumes to a single drive tape device or other supported media. Data Protector Express options can be added to extend the solution to protect other servers on then network. These options are enabled via the Data Protector Express GUI by adding the appropriate license key:
- For the protection of networked Windows, Linux and NetWare servers by backup to AiO storage pool: HP Data Protector Express Network Server Agent (BB121BA or BB1222BA 3 pack) – one per protected machine.
- For the protection of Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft SQL Server while on-line, by back-up to AiO storage pool: HP Data Protector Express Online Application Agent (BB125BA) – one per application per protected machine
- For automated movement or copy of data backed up to AiO storage pool to tape or other media: HP Data Protector Express D2Any2Any option (BB128BA)
- For the connection of multi-drive tape devices: Data Protector Express Drive Expansion option (BB133BA) – one for each drive in excess of one in the library

| Q6. |
What is the Data Protector Express Storage Domain? |
| A6. |
When Data Protector Express is installed the Data Protector Express Storage Domain is created. The installation also creates the Data Protector Express Catalog. In its initial and simplest state the Storage Domain comprises the Data Protector Express Backup Server, backup devices and the Data Protector Express Catalog. To protect additional machines, they are added to the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. There is one Data Protector Express Storage Domain per Data Protector Express Catalog, and one Data Protector Express Catalog per Storage Domain.
|
 |
| Q7. |
What is the Data Protector Express Catalog? |
| A7. |
The Data Protector Express Catalog is a special purpose database that contains all the information about the Data Protector Express Storage Domain.
The catalog contains the information about:
- protected machines
- jobs and job status
- backup devices and media
- location and versions of backed up files
- security permissions
- recent logs
The catalog, by default, is installed on the machine running the Data Protector Express Backup Server but it can be installed on any machine on the network. The catalog should be installed on a reliable disk system and backed up regularly. Access to the catalog is required for a Data Protector Express tasks. |

| Q8. |
What is the Data Protector Express Network Server Agent? |
| A8. |
When the Data Protector Express Backup Server is installed, the Data Protector Express Storage Domain is created. To use Data Protector Express to protect additional servers, these servers are added to the Data Protector Express Storage Domain. The Data Protector Express component required to join a machine to the Storage Domain, is the Data Protector Express Network Server Agent. One of these is needed for each machine added to the Storage Domain. New with Data Protector Express 4.0, the Network Server Agent also enables the machine to operate as a media server for itself or for other machines in the Storage Domain - a feature that previously required a separate license. Network Server Agents are available individually (BB121BA) or in three packs (BB122AA). |

| Q10. |
What is the Data Protector Express D2Any2Any option? |
| A10. |
Data Protector Express has a powerful yet easy to use disk-to-disk (D2D) backup and recovery capability. D2D Backup Capacity is managed by creating Virtual Libraries using capacity from any visible local or network disk. The Data Protector Express D2Any2Any option extends D2D backup functionality as well as automating the copy capability from other backup targets to tertiary media.
When used in conjunction with a Data Protector Express Virtual Library the D2Any2Any option:
- Moves/copies backup data in the Virtual Library to any supported media.
- Automates this movement with policies to copy/move backups based on time or capacity
- Allows the easy implementation of D2D2Tape backup
When used in conjunction with supported backup devices the D2Any2Any option:
- Allows a copy job to be associated with a backup job so a copy executes automatically after the backup job has completed
- When the backup job is controlled by a rotation schedule, allows copy jobs to associated with some but not all instances of the backup job to control which backups, and how many, are copied to tertiary media
- Allows the automatic movement of backups made to Virtual Tape Libraries, such as the HP D2D Backup System, to tape and direct recovery from tape

| Q11. |
What is the Data Protector Express Drive Expansion option? |
| A11. |
When Data Protector Express (Backup Server of Network Server Agent) is installed on a machine there is support for the local connection of up to 32 physical or virtual devices. If any of these devices has two or more drives the Data Protector Express Drive Expansion option (BB133BA) is required for each drive in excess of one. This means tape drives, tape autoloaders, tape enclosures, and single virtual drive Virtual Libraries do not require the Drive Expansion option. This option is required for example for a tape library with two drives, which requires one Data Protector Express Drive Expansion option. A Virtual Library configured with 4 virtual drives requires three Data Protector Express Drive Expansion options. The Data Protector Express Storage Management Domain can have up to 12 Drive Expansion LTUs installed. These can all be for one library or distributed between multiple libraries. |

| Q12. |
How does data encryption work in Data Protector Express? |
| A12. |
Data Protector Express allows users to transport backup media offsite with the security of knowing that if the media is lost it will not be readable by any third party. The use of backup data encryption is made as simple and reliable as possible. The user configures data encryption when the job is created. The data encryption simply requires the user to enter a passphrase. An optional hint can be associated with the passphrase. Then, transparently to the users, a secure encryption key is created based on the passphrase and other values. To recover data from an encrypted medium, the passphrase must be entered. If the passphrase cannot be remembered, the restore job will not run. A lost passphrase cannot be recovered. The same simple data encryption process is used for the software-based data encryption as well as when using hardware-based data encryption, such as the HP Ultrium LTO-4 tape drives.

| Q13. |
Why do I need to register Data Protector Express? |
| A13. |
The Data Protector Express Backup Server and each Data Protector Express option are delivered with an Entitlement Certificate. This Entitlement Certificate has a unique Registration Number that is exchanged, using a registration process, for a License Key that will permanently enable the software.
The easy registration process is web based, although it is also possible to register by post, email or fax.
For the initial installation of the Backup Server it is recommended that the License Key is acquired before the software is installed so that the License key can be entered during the installation process. Data Protector Express options are easily enabled by adding the required License Key.
It is possible to install the Data Protector Express Backup Server in "instant-on" mode using the embedded 60-day evaluation License Key. The permanent License Key can be added at any time in the 60 days after installation. If no permanent License Key is entered the software will stop working after 60 days.
Note: The Data Protector Express Small Business Server Package uses a compound permanent License key to enable the Data Protector Express Backup Server and the included options.
For information about registering Data Protector Express to get the License Key see here http://www.hp.com/go/dataprotectorexpress/register |
