HP File System Viewer extends HP Storage Essentials Suite with high performance file-level storage
resource management (SRM) capabilities. Whether your file servers are hosted on direct attached storage (DAS), network
attached storage (NAS), or storage area networks (SAN), this optional Application plug-in provides the file system
scanning, analysis, and reporting features you need to reclaim wasted disk space, ensure file server availability,
monitor user consumption, and classify unstructured data.
HP File System Viewer automatically discovers your file systems, logical volumes, and user shares,
and scans every file and directory to collect statistics on age, size, type, and more. Detailed reports categorize
files according to file extensions (e.g. mp3, log, tmp, pst), size, and dates created, last accessed, and last
modified so you can quickly identify disk space that can be recycled, pinpoint critical files that should be
replicated, and more accurately implement ILM initiatives.
Because the module is tightly integrated with the SAN management capabilities of HP Storage Essentials
Suite, it also depicts file server dependencies on HBAs, fabric switches, and storage systems, and extends
the suite's full range of role-based security, event management, reporting, and policy-based automation
capabilities to your file servers.

Features |
 |
 |
 |
| Automated Discovery of File System Resources |
- Discovers logical volumes, file systems, user shares, directories, and individual files
| Scalable Collection of File Details |
- Scans every file to collect name, extension, age, size, and type statistics
- Utilizes highly scalable distributed database technology instead of flat files or low-end databases
to stage results of host scans
- Able to scan volumes with millions of files where other solutions hang, crash, or return incomplete results
| High Performance Reporting |
- Transfers file details from distributed hosts to central repository using highly efficient metadata
transfer algorithm, which minimizes network impact
- Leverages centrally stored metadata to run new file-level reports without having to revisit distributed
staging databases on each scanned host
- Able to successfully run reports with millions of entries in hours where other solutions hang or take days
| Multiple Operating System Support |
- Standardizes file-level reporting for Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, and Sun Solaris operating
environments
- Scans remotely mounted volumes and mapped directories on all supported platforms
| Network Attached Storage (NAS) Support |
- Scans remotely mounted NAS volumes on all supported platforms
- Option to selectively turn on/off scanning of specific volumes to avoid redundant scans on NAS volumes
exported to multiple hosts
- Total files and aggregate file size listed and graphed by date created, last modified, and last accessed
- Groupings of files based on date ranges (e.g. files not accessed in over 1 year, over 6 months, over 30 days)
- Reports by file server and by volume (partition) with drill down to individual files
- Total files and size of files listed and graphed by extension (e.g. .log, .tmp, .mp3, .jpg, .dmp)
- Extension sort filter for fast searching
- Reports by file server and by volume (partition) with drill down to individual files
| User and Group Consumption Analysis and Chargeback Reporting |
- Total files and size of files listed and graphed by user share (e.g. /users/jsmith) and by group, with drill
down to individual user files
- User filter for fast searching
- User share soft quota thresholds and alerts
- Group disk space utilization reports enhance Chargeback module with file-level details
| Capacity Management and Planning |
- Total Capacity, Total Used, Percent Used, Number of Users, Users' Space, Groups, and Groups' Space
listed and graphed for all file servers and logical volumes
- "In context" capacity views for all resources that support each file server volume (host server,
fabric switch, storage array)
- Historical capacity trend charts and trend extrapolation
| SAN Topology Visualization, Dependency Management, and
Performance Monitoring |
- Integrates tightly with SAN management capabilities of HP Storage Essentials Suite
- Graphically maps the path of each file system through the SAN to identify the impact of HBA, fabric switch, and
storage system health on specific files
- Real-time performance monitoring of file server, HBA, fabric switch, and storage system statistics for fast
root cause analysis of file server performance problems
| Event and Policy Management |
- Free Space, Percentage Storage Used, and Soft Quota triggers for all file server volumes to proactively
avoid out-of-space problems
- Actions for sending email, generating events, or running custom scripts or programs
| Role-based Security and Organizational Groupings |
- Grant read-only and asset modification permissions to different administrators
- Block specific file servers, switches and arrays from different administrators' views
