Overview

HP Storage Essentials automatically discovers, monitors, and analyzes capacity for every element of your storage infrastructure, providing the information you need to simplify and error-proof your budgeting, forecasting, and consolidation initiatives. By leveraging its unique application-to-spindle capacity views, you'll also be able to identify orphaned capacity and underutilized storage that can be allocated to defer new storage purchases.

Capacity explorer capabilities give you the "big picture" view of your storage environment. Current, historical, and projected capacity information is delivered for all supported business applications, host servers, fabric switches, and storage systems. For each resource type, capacity information is presented in the appropriate context for that resource (e.g. megabytes free for logical host volumes; used and available ports for a fabric switch; mapped, unmapped, unallocated, and unused raw capacity for disk pools in a storage system).

Canned utilization charts summarize capacity use by host operating system, connection types by switch, port utilization by storage system, and more. Historical trends are available for every resource, and can be charted over any length of time by day, week, month, or year. In addition, trends can be extrapolated over a user-defined period to forecast future capacity demands, enabling you to see which logical and physical resources will exhaust capacity soon, and which have excess capacity that can be leveraged.

At-a-glance views of your enterprise storage capacity include live thumbnail graphs for each resource, while the bottom pane provides detailed capacity tables, graphs, and trends for the selected resource

Features

Enterprise-wide capacity summary view

  • Display storage topology with live capacity thumbnail graphs affixed to each resource with capacity information.
  • Color-coded pie graphs represent capacity information in context for each resource:

    • Total Used and Available capacity for supported business applications (e.g. Oracle Database)
    • Total Used, Available, and Unmounted capacity for host servers
    • Total Used and Available ports for supported fabric switches
    • Mapped, Unmapped, Unallocated, and Unused Raw capacity for supported storage systems

Detailed capacity views for each selected resource

  • Drill down into the capacity details for every resource type with a single click
  • Total Capacity, Total Used, Available, and Percentage Used for all database instances and database files (requires optional database modules)
  • Total Capacity, Total Used, Available, and Percentage Used for all Exchange Server instances and Storage Group (requires optional Exchange Server module)
  • Total Capacity, Total Used, Available, and Percentage Used for all supported servers and logical storage volumes, partitions, and file systems
  • Total Ports, Total Used, Available, and Percentage Used for all supported fabric switches
  • Total Capacity, Mapped, Unmapped, Total Allocated, and Unallocated for all supported storage systems, disk pools, array groups, and volume groups

Out-of-the-box utilization charts for host, switch, and storage system classes

  • View list of standard utilization charts
  • Utilization charts for host storage include:

    • Aggregated Host Utilization
    • Utilization Summary for Each Host Operating System Type
    • Utilization Summary for All Host Operating Systems
    • Host Storage Summary
    • Host Storage Summary
    • Host File System Utilization
    • Remote vs. Local Utilization
  • Utilization charts for fabric switches include:

    • Total Switch Port Utilization
    • Port Utilization by Connection Type (Host, ISL, Storage System, Open)
  • Utilization charts for storage systems include:

    • Aggregated Storage System Utilization
    • Aggregated Storage System Port Utilization
    • Utilization Summary for Each Storage System Type

Configurable chart types and trend periods for each resource

  • Select from bar or line charts
  • Choose from canned time periods, including Last Seven Days, Last Month, and Last Year
  • View capacity over custom start and end periods using Start and End date fields with pop-up calendars

Trend extrapolation

  • Select custom start and end dates
  • Choose trend period to determine how far into the future each capacity statistic for the selected resource should be extrapolated
