Overview

The flexible Discovery features of Storage Essentials Manager eliminate the inefficiencies, staff hours, and errors associated with manual storage inventory processes. The flexible scanning options and detailed data collection capabilities ensure that your knowledge of your storage infrastructure is complete and accurate.

Storage Essentials Manager automatically discovers storage systems, fabric switches, and hosts through a combination of SMI-S, CIM, and SNMP interfaces and device vendor APIs. You can specify which elements to discover simply by entering IP addresses or IP address ranges. Once the devices are discovered, an additional detailed scan is performed to capture the complete set of asset, capacity, performance, and configuration details. Scans can be performed on individual elements, groups of elements, or your entire infrastructure on demand or on a scheduled basis.

Information for all elements is stored in the common Oracle® database shared by all HP Storage Essentials Suite plug-ins. The database schema is CIM-compliant, and SMI-S is used to graphically represent each managed device, enabling you to view element attributes and dependencies and manage devices from different vendors using the same, standards-based interface.

Storage Essentials Manager discovers supported elements, models them according to SMI-S,
and provides a Web-based interface for drilling down to element details, as shown by the
navigation page for this Brocade Silkworm 3800 fabric switch

Features

Agentless technology

  • Discovers storage system and fabric switch resources and element details without requiring any host agents to be deployed
  • Host discovery requires installation of single, common CIM extension (agent)

Flexible scanning options

  • Scans IP addresses and IP address ranges for fast auto-discovery of all storage resources
  • Separate detailed scan collects complete set of asset, capacity, performance, and configuration details
  • Scans can be performed on individual elements, groups of elements, or your entire infrastructure on demand or on a scheduled basis
  • "Test" option verifies that elements are reachable before scanning starts
