Overview

HP XP Snapshot Software, an integrated feature of HP XP Business Copy Software, replicates critical business data to create multiple, point-in-time, online, local copies without impacting primary production operation. XP Snapshot enables a wide range of enterprise applications and solutions, including zero-downtime backup, application development and testing, decision support, and disaster recovery mirroring. When these applications have completed, the secondary volumes can be resynchronized back with their primary volume to reflect updates that have occurred to the source since the time of the split. Whereas XP Business Copy copies all the data to the secondary volume, the secondary copy that is created by XP Snapshot uses a replication logic that only physically copies data from the primary that will soon be rewritten by the array controller (also known as copy-before-write). This allows secondary volumes to be a small fraction of the size of the primary copy. Designed for environments where the secondary I/O is read-intensive or relatively infrequently accessed, XP Snapshot can reduce the storage requirements and cost of implementing applications that use a secondary volume design.

Features and Benefits

  • Simplicity without Compromise - create multiple, point-in-time, online local copies of data: XP Snapshot, an integrated feature of XP Business Copy, allows secondary applications like zero-downtime backup, decision support, etc. that are I/O intensive to be run concurrently with primary applications using the secondary copy without performance degradation or non-availability of the primary copy.
  • Growth without limits -replication logic is space-efficient snapshot logic: By only copying data from the primary just before that data is rewritten (also known as copy-before-first-write), the secondary copy only needs enough disk space to retain and track the changes. This allows the XP Snapshot secondary copy to be just a fraction of the size of the primary copy.
  • Change without Chaos - uses the same management logic as Business Copy: Storage Administrators that are already familiar with XP Business Copy and XP Command View will be able to quickly and easily integrate XP Snapshot, reducing storage management costs.
  • Up to 64 online, RAID-protected copies: Storage administrators have greater flexibility in managing copy versions due to this higher limit, enabling more complex operational strategies and virtually unlimited parallel application processing.
  • Up to 8,192 Snapshot secondary volumes can exist on a single array: As overall data volumes continue to grow, and arrays get larger, XP Snapshot can meet the secondary volume requirements in very large storage configurations. This extends opportunities for lower-cost growth and larger-scale consolidation.
