Overview

The HP StorageWorks Coarse Wave Division Multiplexer (CWDM) family is a set of passive optical multiplexers designed to provide optical networking support for high-speed data Fibre Channel & Ethernet communication over Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). These passive devices utilize a grid of eight CWDM optical wavelengths in either ring or point-to-point configurations. The ability to support these configurations is accomplished by either multiplexing or demultiplexing multiple wavelengths – (also referred to as channels), or by adding or dropping channels. Traffic operating over these channels is generated by special HP’s CWDM transceivers that are attached to network switches or router devices.

The HP StorageWorks CWDM Multiplexer family is easy to operate with a reliable, low-maintenance design that uses no power supplies and no electronics. These multiplexers come in two basic types, the 4-port CWDM Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (OADM) and 8-port CWDM Mux/Demux. together these passive devices can be used in combination to support many types of network deployments/applications. These CWDM solutions allow up to 8, 4Gb channels to share a single set of fibers to connect up to 8 locations in ring network configurations. The complete CWDM solution consists of the Multiplexer modules, chassis, 8 color code transceivers that are inserted into a SAN switch, and 9 micron, single mode, LC/LC cables The Multiplexers are plugged into a private or service provider optical network.

Features and Benefits

  • Multiplexes and demultiplexes up to 8, 4Gb channels over a single set of Fibre: Lower cost solution for high speed SAN extension over a Metro Area Network using an optical fibre network.

  • Passive devices with no power supplies and other active electronics to fail: Highly reliable solution with very little maintenance required.

  • Flexible configurations support point-to-point and multi-site add drop capability: Allows customers to build Metro Area Networks for 2 to 8 sites for high speed SANs.
