Answers

Q1. Does Ultrium 960 FC tape drive support Adaptive Tape Speed (ATS)?
A1. Yes, the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 tape drives available throughout the entire ESL portfolio do carry forward the ATS technology from the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 460 and 960 tape drives. The range for the second generation of drives was from 10-30 MB/sec; for the HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 tape drive the range is 27-80 MB/sec.
Q2. What are the performance considerations in using the new Ultrium 960 tape drives in an existing ESL9000 tape library?
A2. The Ultrium 960 tape drives in an existing ESL9000 library are limited to a maximum bus speed of 160MB/s. The full performance of the drive can be used with data that is compressible at a 2:1 ratio or less. For data with a greater than 2:1 compression ratio the drive will not operate at full speed but will still have full capacity. The ATS technology will reduce the tape speed as necessary to maintain streaming for data with a greater than 2:1 compression ratio and can maintain streaming at rates up to 6:1 compression if the host is able to send the data at full bus speed.
Q3. Which media should I use?
A3. HP recommends either the HP Ultrium 800GB Data Cartridges or the HP 800GB WORM Data Cartridges which have been tested together to ensure the optimum performance of the complete HP Ultrium solution. The HP product specifications for HP Ultrium media is unique and covers several areas, like shoeshine and load/unload, which are relevant to ESL automation customers but excluded from industry standard tests. HP applies quality control testing on every single batch of media to ensure that it meets the HP product specifications. LTO Generation 1 offered 100 GB of native capacity and 15 MB per second transfer speeds. LTO Ultrium 460 tape drive doubles capacity and speed offering you 200 GB of native capacity and 30 MB/s native transfer speed.
Q4. Is Ultrium a reliable, robust technology with a future?
A4. HP offers an entire product lineup of Ultrium products from media and drives to libraries. Reliability is quoted at 250,000 hrs at 100% duty cycle and substantiated by: Adaptive tape speed innovations preventing shoe shining, Low heat dissipation, 100,000 load/unload specification, Ultrium's future is certain, backed by HP, IBM, and Certance, the three largest names in the storage industry, Robust six-generation roadmap being executed to schedule.
