Answers

Q1. Why should I use the IP Distance Gateway? What are the benefits?
A1. Fibre Channel standards specify nominal distances between switch elements that are less than the distances available in an IP network. Since Fibre Channel and IP networking technologies are compatible, tapping into a more affordable and available IP service can dramatically reduce the monthly cost of wide-area links and extend the maximum distance between Fibre Channel sites.
Q2. Can my existing HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) use the IP Distance Gateway?
A2. Yes, the HP IP Distance Gateway supports all existing HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) models. The IP Distance Gateway can be added to an EVA already installed or installed with a new EVA.
Q3. What are the primary uses of the HP IP Distance Gateway?
A3.

Storage Optimization:  connection to remote SANs.
SAN scalability: ability to build larger, more modular storage networks utilizing IP networks.
Data Migration:  simplify and accelerate storage consolidation, repurposing of equipment and more.
Disaster Recovery:  Utilize remote sites for protection and recovery of important data.

Q4. What are some of the customer problems this solution helps to address?
A4.

Customer Problem:  Proliferation of SAN islands
Solution: The IP Distance Gateway allows HP Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) and HP XP Disk Array FC SANs to connect through IP networks, taking advantage of costs savings from Fibre Channel over IP.

Customer Problem: Need for low-cost disaster recovery solutions
Solution: The IP Distance Gateway provides a low-cost solution for replicating data across large distances for recovery in a disaster.

Customer Problem: Want to extract more ROI from existing FC SAN environment
Solution: : The IP Distance Gateway extends EVA and XP FC SAN solutions by allowing customers to share SAN resources globally. It enables SAN devices to be shared independently across any SAN fabric.

Q5. Does the IP Distance Gateway support high availability configurations?
A5. Yes, two hardware units may be implemented for high availability and redundant data paths.
Q6. Why is the HP Continuous Access EVA Software required with this product?
A6. Continuous Access EVA Software provides the software solution that allows for the creation, management, and configuration of remote data replication on the entire EVA product family. Continuous Access EVA Software provides the necessary components to solve enterprises business continuity objectives in a very cost effective and easily deployable package.
Q7. If I already own the HP Continuous Access EVA Software do I need to purchase additional licenses?
A7. You will need a Continuous Access Software license for each end of the remote connection. If you already own those licenses, no additional purchase is required. You may, however, need to purchase additional licenses for redundancy.
