WORM (or write once, read many) storage is a data storage technology that allows information to be written to storage media a single time, preventing the user from accidentally or intentionally altering or erasing the data. Developed in the late 1970s and widely used since the early 1980s, optical storage technologies were the first to implement mainstream WORM storage. Offering fast access and long-term storage capabilities, optical WORM storage has historically been used for archiving data that requires a long retention period (e.g. medical images, patents). Driven by the recent growth of legislation in many countries, WORM storage is now increasingly being used for archiving corporate data such as financial documents, emails, and certification documents. To meet the demands of this data growth, many storage technologies now support WORM technology including Ultra Density Optical (UDO), Magneto-Optical (MO), HDD, and magnetic tape. |

New legislation is re-defining the way we store and manage data. Since most new data is now in digital format, governmental and regulatory agencies have began enacting new laws and guidelines regarding the methods for storing electronic records. Depending on the legislation applicable to your company, generally speaking, legal compliance puts the onus on directors, board members, and company executive officers to ensure that organizations take all reasonable steps to protect electronic records, to ensure only authorized access, and to ensure that audit procedures are available for inspection by the relevant authorities. Individual technologies such as write once, read many (WORM) tape storage can be used to enhance protection and audit standards. |
