Q1. I understand that Cisco and HP have announced an embedded Fabric Switch called the Cisco MDS 9124e Multilayer Fabric Switch. How does this switch differ?
A1. The embedded Cisco Fabric Switch (9124e) is based on the same new ASIC (Application Specifc Integrated Circuit) technology as the Cisco MDS 9124 Fabric Switch standard is functionally equivalent but in an embedded form factor. Both switches are supported by the same version of SAN-OS and manageable by the Cisco MDS 9000 family CLI (Command Line Interface) and management software packages. The MDS 9124 supports a wide range of servers in addition to the HP c-Class BladeServer.
Q2. Why would a customer use this Cisco MDS 9124 switch instead of the MDS 9124e embedded version?
A2. The MDS 9124e for the HP c-Class BladeServer is a switch in an embedded blade from factor and can only be used in that specific BladeServer chassis. The MDS 9124 Fabric Switch is a standalone switch that may be used with a wide range of server platforms.

A3. The Cisco MDS 9124 comes with 24 fixed ports There are three port-count options for greater flexibility, as well as the option of an 8-port upgrade license for lower cost of entry, where needed. . The MDS 9124 is offered with 8, 16 or 24-ports Active from the HP factory. The Cisco MDS 9124 8-port activation Upgrade license option enables users to activate ports in 8port increments and provides customers a low entry cost and a ‘pay as you grow’ model.

A5. HP Services provides the support for the Cisco MDS 9124 Fabric Switch. Hardware warranty support is 1-1-1 (one-year on-site, normal business hours, next business day response). The hardware warranty covers firmware and embedded non-saleable software. Additional services are available and include Support Plus, Support Plus 24, Pro-active 24, Critical Services and 4 hour CTR (Call To Repair). These services are offered for 1 or 3 years. Installation is not included, but is available as a separately orderable option.
