»Do I need different minicartridges for my HP Colorado 8GB and my HP Surestore T4 tape drives?
»How often should the Surestore T4 tape head be cleaned?
»Why are the HP TR-4 data cartridges more expensive than tapes for DAT drives?

Do I need different minicartridges for my HP Colorado 8GB and my HP Surestore T4 tape drives?

No. The HP TR-4 formatted mini data cartridge is designed to be used with both of these drives and gives maximum capacity.

How often should the Surestore T4 tape head be cleaned?

Never. The head has been designed to be self cleaning. Do not attempt to clean it as this is likely to damage it. Do not use solvents and cotton wool swabs to clean the head. There are third-party cleaning cassettes on the market intended for QIC drives; however they are not approved for use with the HP Surestore T4 and will probably destroy the head.

Why are the HP TR-4 data cartridges more expensive than tapes for DAT drives?

T4 tape drives have a relatively simple design that makes them more affordable. This means the mechanism for tape tensioning and alignment has to be built into the cartridge, resulting in higher cartridge cost. The reverse is true for DAT drives which has simpler tape cartridges and more complex media handling mechanisms.
